The Fall – Week 8, Long Run

Workout: 7 miles @ 7:37 pace.  Weather: 77 degrees, partly cloudy.

Recap: Good grief…

Warm out there today at 77 degrees and 83% humidity. Awful conditions, and I felt them after mile 3. The first two miles were pretty comfortable. I thought I’d have another easy run. Then it got hard. I wanted to quit the whole time. Rather than try to silence the voice in my head that said, “Quit”, I embraced. Like being a pitcher at an unfriendly ball park, I just pictured the fans booing me the whole time and still doing my job. Only instead of fans, it was just me telling myself to give up and try again another day. I didn’t run for the last two days – partly to let the foot rest, and partially because I just didn’t get out there in time.

Every time I kept trying to declare the Texas summer over, it keeps coming back. I’m done this time. It can end when it wants to… hopefully soon. Off to watch Texas-Oklahoma. Hookem Horns!

Richard! The fall hasn’t entirely come to Columbus yet, either. We’ve had highs this week around 77 or 78…the mornings, though, are like 45 or 50 degrees. So as long as that maintains for race day, I’ll be happy. It’s not hitting high 70s until late afternoon.

I did my last “long” run yesterday. It was only 8 miles, so that’s why I put “long” in quotes. After all I’ve done this summer, 8 miles seems like nothing! And it was GREAT! Goal time was 9:05 (race pace), but I did splits of 8:56, 8:52, 8:48, 8:49, 8:50, 8:47, 8:25 and 8:22!!!! Really kicked it up at the end, feeling so good about this. Easy week as I taper. 6 x 400 speed workout, then an easy 3 miles later in the week…then race day! I’m pretty excited. Feeling very grateful that my last three long runs (20, 10, 8 miles) all went well, giving me some hope and confidence.

I hope you’re doing well. Miss you!

Wow. Sounds like you’re following that plan to the last letter. Props on the negative split workout. I’ve never found it easy to move down in pace throughout a run. No worries about the “long”…my 7 wasn’t long either! Good luck next week!
